About Jonathan Merage
Jonathan has been a severe storms photographer and videographer from his home in Denver for over 10 years, documenting severe weather phenomena from large tornadoes and lightning to dust storms and aesthetic cloud formations in a comprehensive collection of images and footage sure to capture the eye. He studied meteorology at Purdue University in the early 2000's, but his passion for the science began long before that, as a child, where his enthusiasm grew unbridled for years.
“As a kid I loved reading and watching all the severe weather literature and videos I could get my hands on. Other sciences interested me as well: astronomy, seismology (earthquakes), even advanced aircraft design & performance were all fascinating topics that kept me busy for days. But I quickly realized that meteorology was the one I could most readily and easily know, see, and most importantly experience first hand and up-close.”
After moving to Colorado in the mid-1990s, he quickly took advantage of the beauty offered by the Front Slopes of the Rocky Mountains and adjacent Great Plains to compile his expansive portfolio with his Canon 40D and a variety of HD camcorders. Fueled by his fervent passion and love of knowledge of storms and tornadoes, he coupled his curiosity and intellect with what he learned in childhood to follow and even predict nature's fury.
“Observing and researching storms has always been a special and unique experience. Beyond the sheer challenges of seeing, analyzing and anticipating their awesome power, there is a certain zen to it all which takes me past my limits-- always wanting to know and see more. Their uninhibited yet organized fury and structural beauty always gives me a first-hand experience to nature's most powerful balancing acts in action!”
Jonathan has researched and documented many storms and tornadoes of countless varieties up-close, had his footage aired on local and national news (refer to Media for info), participated in severe storms research projects including VORTEX2 (vortex2.org), lectured on the topic, and leads an active lifestyle within the storm chasing community. He also enjoys teaching about the subject and related science topics.
